To an extent, the term “critical race theory” is now cited as the basis of all diversity and inclusion efforts regardless of how much it’s actually informed those programs. Thus, there is a good deal of confusion over what CRT means, as well as its relationship to other terms, like “anti-racism” and “social justice,” with which it is often conflated. Critics charge that the theory leads to negative dynamics, such as a focus on group identity over universal, shared traits divides people into “oppressed” and “oppressor” groups and urges intolerance. This academic understanding of critical race theory differs from representation in recent popular books and, especially, from its portrayal by critics-often, though not exclusively, conservative Republicans. And its ideas have since informed other fields, like the humanities, the social sciences, and teacher education. Today, those same patterns of discrimination live on through facially race-blind policies, like single-family zoning that prevents the building of affordable housing in advantaged, majority-white neighborhoods and, thus, stymies racial desegregation efforts.ĬRT also has ties to other intellectual currents, including the work of sociologists and literary theorists who studied links between political power, social organization, and language. Banks subsequently refused to offer mortgages to Black people in those areas. The basic tenets of critical race theory, or CRT, emerged out of a framework for legal analysis in the late 1970s and early 1980s created by legal scholars Derrick Bell, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and Richard Delgado, among others.Ī good example is when, in the 1930s, government officials literally drew lines around areas deemed poor financial risks, often explicitly due to the racial composition of inhabitants. The core idea is that race is a social construct, and that racism is not merely the product of individual bias or prejudice, but also something embedded in legal systems and policies. Just what is critical race theory anyway?Ĭritical race theory is an academic concept that is more than 40 years old. This explainer is meant only as a starting point to help educators grasp core aspects of the current debate. School boards, superintendents, even principals and teachers are already facing questions about critical race theory, and there are significant disagreements even among experts about its precise definition as well as how its tenets should inform K-12 policy and practice. Add children and schooling into the mix and the debate becomes especially volatile. But there is much less consensus on what the government’s role should be in righting these past wrongs. The events of the last decade have increased public awareness about things like housing segregation, the impacts of criminal justice policy in the 1990s, and the legacy of enslavement on Black Americans. In truth, the divides are not nearly as neat as they may seem. The topic has exploded in the public arena this spring-especially in K-12, where numerous state legislatures are debating bills seeking to ban its use in the classroom. Is “critical race theory” a way of understanding how American racism has shaped public policy, or a divisive discourse that pits people of color against white people? Liberals and conservatives are in sharp disagreement. Sign up for our EdWeek Update newsletter to get stories like this delivered to your inbox daily. If we want to order or sort the dictionary objects by their keys, the simplest way to do so is by Python's built-in sorted method, which will take any iterable and return a list of the values which has been sorted (in ascending order by default). Both good points! In case you hadn't already seen it. Pass the specified key into the index () function, it will check the passed key is exist in the list and return the index position of the passed key. Then use the list.index () function to get the index position of the specified key in the dictionary. > sorted(eritems(), key=lambda (k,v): (v,k)) First, using list () function you can convert the dictionary to a list of keys. Instead, you can use the items() method of the dictionary to return a list of key-value pairs, and then apply enumerate() to the list of key/value pairs. print sorted (erkeys ()) 'Apple', 'Banana', 'Cantaloupe', 'Grapes', 'Orange'. We know that dictionaries are unordered, there is no index to enumerate over. You can obtain a sorted list of the keys using the sorted () function on the iterkeys () method. #6 Rama krishna commented on :Īre you sure this works? please see my result (I did in python shell): > d= Iterate over all key-value pairs of dictionary by index. I will definitely try your method the next chance I get. However, you could try using an Ordered Dict (included in Python 2.7+) to get around this. You can order the display, but not the keys themselves in the dict. Gregg, Good work- your article shows that you have obviously explored this topic much more thoroughly than I have. Examples of Extracting Dictionary Values as a List in Python Example 1: Use a list() function to extract dictionary values as a list Example 2: Use a list. An Australian release is yet to be determined.- Private Escape Rooms. Susie Searches is releasing in theatres in the United States on July 28th, 2023. Primarily succeeding off the eccentric energy of Clemons, Susie Searches is worthy of an exploration. When we think the film has shown its hand, it pulls another card out to make us question all that has come before, and just as it appears to be wrapping up in the neatest of manners, it saves its best reveal for last. Whilst the film’s tone isn’t always consistent – it’s never seemingly sure if it wants to commit to being a thriller or a comedy – Susie Searches is never lost for intrigue. Her own questionable mentality is well balanced by Wolff’s inherently sweet portrayal of Jesse, with the two earning a natural chemistry that speaks to their effortless likeability though there’s always an uncertainty surrounding Jesse that further leans into Kargman’s ability to shape morally dubious characters. Susie herself is someone we constantly question, but Clemons’s nuanced performance injects the character with so much heart that we want to ignore, or even accept, the darker tendencies of her personality. Without giving too much away, Susie Searches toys with just who we should be barracking for throughout. There’s the sense that as much as she dives in to solve Jesse’s disappearance, there’s an ulterior motive lingering Jesse’s popularity can transfer to her should she find him and they ride the publicity wave together. As much as Kargman’s film explores Susie’s own desire to truly succeed at solving crimes, her script delves deeper into the exploration of loneliness and the need for connection, with Susie’s podcast and her Twitter account acting as her gateway to such. Her social outcast-ness and inability to drive her followers up manage to be solved in one foul swoop, however, when classmate – and campus “celebrity” – Jesse ( Alex Wolff) mysteriously disappears, and she takes it upon herself to solve the case. An interest that began from her childhood, where she would instinctually solve the mysteries of the crime novels her mother would read to her at night, Susie has channelled her passion into a podcast of her own – “Susie Searches” – but in juggling that, her school workload, caring for her now ailing mother and a monotonous food service job (where Rachel Sennott steals every minute possible as her snarky co-worker), her personal life has taken a considerable backseat. The titular Susie (Clemons) is an awkward college student of sorts who has an obsession with true crime. Another slice of media that feeds into our obsession with true crime, Susie Searches is a quirky comedy/thriller that can’t altogether escape the trappings of its by-the-book structure, but an engaging performance from the always watchable Kiersey Clemons, a few neat twists and turns throughout, and one hell of an ending is sure to leave audiences ultimately glad they came along to help solve Sophie Kargman‘s mystery. Taking a break to view and share bits of cute or funny pop culture commentary in the form of COVID-19-related memes can be a quick and easy way to connect with others and address pandemic stress head-on through laughter.Watch Video: Online meme groups sweeping college campuses The pandemic, with its accompanying restrictions on travel, work, and socializing, has been an uncommonly stressful time. Instead, it likely depends on the specific type of media message you are consuming, the type of person you are, and the situation in which you are consuming it. Together, these studies suggest that media use is not always the stress-inducing experience or waste of time that it is sometimes portrayed to be. In her surveys of college students and breast cancer patients, people who choose media for stress management reported it as an effective way to cope. For example, my collaborator Robin Nabi has found in previous work that using media-whether television, books, or social media-is one of the top strategies for managing stress. This work adds to a growing body of research demonstrating that people use media to help them deal with stress. It’s possible that exerting more effort thinking about the topic could lead to mentally rehearsing ways to cope with the related stress, instead of avoiding it entirely. Those who saw COVID-19-related memes also reported thinking more deeply about the memes and their meaning-what media psychologists call “information processing.” More information processing was related to more confidence in their abilities to handle pandemic-related stress. People who viewed memes about COVID-19 rated themselves as less stressed about life during a global pandemic. There seems to be value in reframing something that is constantly stressful and scary into a more approachable topic by using humor. Moreover, we found that participants who rated themselves higher on the positive emotion scale were also more likely to feel confident in their ability to handle the stress associated with living through a global pandemic. In short, viewing a few cute or funny memes-regardless of their topic-provided a quick boost of positive emotion for many people. For instance, people who saw memes scored, on average, a 4.71 on our positive emotions scale, compared with an average of 3.85 for those who did not see a meme. People who viewed just three memes rated themselves on a 1-7 scale as calmer, more content, and more amused compared with people who didn’t see the memes. Popular internet memes often develop their own names, such as “Distracted Boyfriend,” “Squinting Woman,” and “Handshakes.” They have existed since long before the birth of the internet, but digital technology adds new dimensions, given the ease of creating, editing, and sharing memes online. Memes are little units of culture that spread from one person to the next. As the pandemic dragged on, I got more and more interested in how people were using social media-and memes featuring cute and funny pics, in particular-as a way to think and communicate with others about life during a global pandemic. I study media processes and effects, which is the psychology of how media messages can affect you. Between work, moving the laundry, and taking care of my own dogs, I could sneak a peek at Instagram and chuckle at images of very excited pups, psyched that their humans were now home all day, every day.
